St. Andrew’s Church Presents: For King and Country

May 5 @ 7:30 pm

Join us at  historic St. Andrew’s Church, the regimental church of the 48th Highlanders, for a unique evening marking the hundredth anniversary of the end of WWI. For King and Country will feature an engaging mix of live musical performances, dramatic readings, displays of rare photographs and artefacts, and more.

The centrepiece of this evening will be the world première of a new CD of songs about Canadians and the First World War by Tony Quarrington. The Toronto musician-composer and Juno Award-winning producer will perform these songs with his band – a dozen or more top local performers. The band will include opera singer and Order of Canada recipient, Mary Lou Fallis, soprano Allison Angelo, trumpeter Stuart Laughton (Canadian Brass), First Nations singer-songwriter Arthur Renwick, James Gordon (Tamarack) and others. Complementing the songs will be a big screen show of wartime photographs and films, and dramatic readings performed by actors Kirk Dunn and Will King.

Audience members can also view a rare battlefield relic, the Vimy Cross. This Celtic-style wooden cross was raised by the 48th Highlanders in the hours after the assault on Vimy Ridge. The Vimy Cross memorializes the soldiers of the 15th Battalion who died in this iconic battle. The Cross will be just back from a year-long loan to Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France. Other rare battlefield artefacts will also be on display this evening in the 48th Highlanders Museum. Tours of the on-site museum will be available before and after the program.

For King and Country is the third and final presentation in Music at St. Andrew’s commemorative trilogy marking key anniversaries of the First and Second World Wars. Portions of both earlier programs were broadcast nationally on CBC Radio.

Tickets are $25 or $20 each for advance (online only) purchases of four or more tickets at standrewstoronto.org. Bring your children and grandchildren.

St. Andrew’s Church is located at King and Simcoe Streets, Toronto – opposite Roy Thomson Hall.
