“The Canada Room” Fundraiser (London, UK)

April 19, 2016 @ 6:00 pm

Our own Doug Gibson will be staging another fund-raiser in London, at the Canadian High Commission’s Canada House in Trafalgar Square. This will be at 6:00pm on Tuesday, April 19, followed by a reception at 7:00. The cost of the fundraiser will be 20 pounds sterling.

Everyone is welcome to attend, but security issues require everyone to register in advance . This can be done by contacting Lisa Tomas at the High Commission whose team will gladly look after any such requests.
Please, if you have any worthy friends in the London area, spread the news about this event, and urge them to come and support this fine Canadian cause.

 A letter from Doug Gibson:

We all know that in the totally objective words of HRH Prince William, The Duke of Cambridge, the University of St Andrews is “the finest university in the world”.

I want to let you know about an opportunity to proclaim our proud Canadian connection with St Andrews, by raising funds to support and name THE CANADA ROOM as part of the major redevelopment of the Students’ Association building.

As a former President of the Union I know just how important the Union can be in providing memorable student experiences. In fact, I am astonished how many of my own happiest memories of my St Andrews days involve sitting and chatting – and arguing – in the Union, while eating, or drinking coffee, or possibly something even stronger. As we all know, a university education takes place not only in lecture halls or libraries, and our fellow students are often our best, most provocative teachers. Looking back I can see how much my happy hours in the Union helped me towards my then-unlikely career as a Canadian book publisher, where I would end up publishing Pierre Trudeau and Alice Munro.

The Union is now home to over 140 student societies, an astonishing number, and more per head than any other university in the UK. But, as the University has grown, the 1970s building proved unable to provide space for all of them to meet and – in the case of the performing arts societies – to rehearse. Hence the decision to redevelop the building very thoroughly.

Included in the redevelopment are two purpose-built rehearsal rooms which offer students high-quality, adaptable spaces within which to hone their skills. With a new 132-seat theatre for the Union, and with the recent acquisition of the Byre Theatre, the University is investing in improved facilities for students to showcase the fruits of those rehearsals.

Along with a keen group of St Andrews alumni, parents and friends, listed below, I have taken on the task of raising $40,000 (CAN) to name one of these rehearsal rooms as THE CANADA ROOM.

If you would like to join us in this endeavour, you can do so by simply clicking here and following the prompts to donate online. St Andrews is a ‘prescribed university outside Canada’ which means tax credits apply for Canadian donors and the University will supply tax receipts in the approved format.

If you would like more information, or want to discuss this over the phone, or indeed to meet in person, I or my colleagues would be delighted to hear from you. Alex Hayes is our contact in the Development team at St Andrews – his contact details appear below.

I hope that, along with me and my colleagues, you like the idea of supporting students at St Andrews in this way, while at the same time securing a small piece of Fife for Canada! We look forward to hearing from you.

With best wishes,
